Abstract
To investigate the association of NOS1 3391 C/T, NOS3 Glu298Asp, and TGF¥â -509 C/T gene polymorphisms in those patients with asthma in a South Korean population, genotypes were analyzed by polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism analysis in 108 asthmatic and 162 nonasthmatic control subjects. The measured genotype frequencies of NOS1 3391 were 0.168 for CC, 0.523 for CT, and 0.308 for TT, in the asthma group. The measured genotype frequencies of NOS3 Glu298Asp were 0.768 for Glu/Glu and 0.232 for the other genotypes in the asthma group. NOS3 Asp/Asp homozygote was not found in this South Korean population. The frequencies of the NOS3 Glu allele were 0.88 and 0.90 in the asthma and control groups, respectively. The frequencies of the TGF¥â C allele were 0.46 and 0.50 in the asthma and control groups, respectively. Neither NOS1 (P = 0.899) nor NOS3 (P = 0.531) polymorphisms showed any association with the occurrence of asthma in this study. However, it was determined that the distribution frequencies of TGF¥â -509 C/T indicated a significant difference between the asthma and control groups (P = 0.036). These findings suggest that TGF¥â -509 C/T polymorphism may be a contributing factor toward asthma in South Korean populations.
